Situated on the westernmost cliffs of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, the City of Palos Verdes Estates real estate and values continues to fulfill former landowner and developer Frank Vanderlip’s vision of the area as the nation’s “most fashionable and exclusively residential colony”, and it remains today as one of Los Angeles County’s most affluent cities.
The development of open land began in 1922. One of the first master-planned real estate communities in the United States, Palos Verdes Estates became the first of the four peninsula cities to be incorporated, in 1939.

By 1925, the first store building in Malaga Cove Plaza was completed. Storm drains, electricity, and a community water system had been installed in preparation for city residents. Roads were nearing completion, and 100,000 trees and shrubbery had been planted. With the opening of a post office, the Palos Verdes community became an officially recognized city. Homes construction continued across the area, with lots in the Valmonte area selling in the $600 range and contraction costs for an average home falling between $6,000-$12,000.
Today, the Art Jury and the Palos Verdes Homes Association continue to oversee building and landscaping across the city. Ninety years’ worth of logistical and aesthetic decisions showcase both the natural beauty of Palos Verdes and the cohesive, beautiful communities that the early planning and architect pioneers worked so hard to achieve.

History of Palos Verdes Estates “Fourth of July Celebration”
Once Upon a Time… 51 Years Ago
Yes we even have baked apple pie!
John Adams was good at prophesying when he said of the 4th of July: “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival.”
The year was 1962 when the Palos Verdes Independence Day Celebration Committee was founded. Advertising guru Bryan Hardwick and wife Denise met with a few close friends and some of the merchants in Malaga Cove Plaza to form a volunteer committee. They agreed that shooting rockets into the night sky over the beautiful Palos Verdes Peninsula was fun, but hardly qualified as a genuine old-fashioned patriotic observance.
In planning the event, Bryan, a Navy veteran, said, “We all realized that the word ‘patriotism’ had lost its sheen. The only time all year that we could proudly promote patriotism and America without someone calling us national chauvinists was the 4th of July.”
At first, the annual all-volunteer celebration on the Little League field at Malaga Cove School grew modestly. Families and friends planned activities and signed up to help, going door-to-door collecting funds to meet expenses. Then in the bicentennial year of 1976, a surge of patriotism swept the country. Attendance at the local celebration soared.
It has been a popular red, white and blue tradition ever since. All-time favorite activities still include the children’s decorated bicycle parade, Jim Gamble puppets, apple pie baking contest, games and picnicking. Patriotic music and stirring speeches emphasize the day’s significance.
Bryan and Denise Hardwick and close friends enjoyed the committee’s beginning years, and now in its 50th year, Hardwick children proudly serve to carry on the tradition.
This Year’s committee members under the chairmanship of Sharon Ryan and Milt Lane are enthusiastically welcoming the Palos Verdes Independence Day Celebration back again on the grounds of Malaga Cove School, commemorating a great nation’s birthday.
